Access for Success

About Us

Here's About Us:

  • Our Profile

Access for Success is a community-based organization in the process of filing for a  501(c)(3) U.S. not-for-profit corporation status to be incorporated in the United States in the State of Washington. In the meantime, we are working with Parents for Student Success (PFSS) that is already an established 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation for management and administration of our fund-raising initiatives.

We are primarily a volunteer-based organization composed of volunteers, both in the United States and in Ethiopia, who have their roots in the various kebele of Goro Woreda in the Bale Administrative zone of Oromia, and who are committed to community-based economic development both in the U.S. and in the Bale region of rural Ethiopia. We also work in Ethiopia supporting community-based integrated rural development. In Ethiopia, we are legally registered as a local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under the Oromia National Regional State, Bureau of Justice.

  • Our Mission and Vision

Access for Success's mission in the U.S. and Ethiopia is to partner and work with rural people, communities, government, and non-governmental agencies to mobilize local resources and to develop the potential for sustainable rural development.

Access for Success's vision in Ethiopia is to accomplish our mission by creating core initiatives and projects in the U.S. such as upgrading rural schools and the educational curriculum, improving water resources, improving sanitation and healthcare, fostering local business development through micro-lending, providing electricity and improving overall communications infrastructure.

In the U.S., our mission is to foster community-based education, to support economic development of the Ethiopian community and Ethiopian businesses in the U.S. and, to connect with, preserve, and further develop cultural exchange and trade of goods and services between U.S. Ethiopian businesses and rural Ethiopian businesses.

  • Our Motivation

Access for Success, as a community-based organization, does what it does because we believe that serving people and communities well in the Bale Region of Ethiopia and in the U.S. is the right thing to do. There are significant developmental challenges to Ethiopian people and communities in Oromia, elsewhere in Ethiopia, and in the United States that AFS can help uniquely address. With authentic roots in the Bale Region and with a real historical connection with people and communities there, there is much that we can uniquely accomplish both in Ethiopia and in the U.S., with your involvement and support.

  • Our Timeline

Since 2008, Access for Success has already been doing significant front-running developmental work both in the Bale Region and in the U.S. We raised funds (administered by Parents for Student Success, a not-for-profit group) and used it to upgrade schools with new desks, library funding and school supplies, and we used it to start a now highly successful, micro-loan program run by a women's business cooperative.

This year, our project plans are equally ambitious and exciting. See our Projects - Bale Region and Projects - U.S. pages for more details.

We are also in the process of recruiting more volunteers and developing a three-year strategic plan that will provide us with organizational and economic development continuity from year to year.
